I’m a slacker on my flats contest!! And extending the chance to win a free dozen flats!
So sorry everyone – I totally spaced on picking a winner on Friday!!!! Since they’re not here yet, I think I’m going to extend the entry through this weekend, too – so leave your comments in this post for your chance to win a dozen FREE flats! Amelia will choose the winner from a hat next Monday at 8am EST (or somewhere right around there – I reserve the right to alter the time a big if I have crying kids;) and I’ll announce right away! Oh, and it’s on my calender with a reminder so that I don’t forget this time;)
I may or may not be letting my kids run around in dish towels today…
They were $0.40 each at a certain Swedish store that sells fun things…I figured it was worth a try to see how they do! I’ll update in a day or two when I can see how they do…
My not-so-secret love of FLATS! {and their many uses}
Confession for the day: I love flats. Old fashioned-one big square layer of fabric-birdseye-fold them yourself flats.
{And I can finally put up this post because I officially have confirmation that I’ll be able to stock flats on my site!! I have the order placed and I cannot wait to get them in my hands and stocked on the site and I CAN’T WAIT!}
First, let me explain flats a bit for those who have never had one in their hands: Flats are literally one large piece of thin material. Prefolds have layers of fabric sewn into them already, you fold flats to create the layers of absorbency. This makes them incredibly easy to take care of and, since they’re just cotton, there’s not much that you can mess up in the laundry!
Some of my favorite uses for flats:
1. Diaper(of course!)
2. Nursing cover
3. Light blanket or sun cover on hot days running around at the park
4. Burp Cloth
5. Cleaning
6. Un-paper Towels
7. Inserts for pocket diapers (thanks Nicole!)
There are just under a million ways to fold a flat(including just folding it in quarters and proceeding with folding like you would fold a prefold), but here are some attempted pictures of my favorite Origami Fold:
Leave a comment with your favorite uses for flats or an idea of what you’d like to use them for and you’ll be entered to win a free dozen when we stock them! One entry per person:) Winner will be drawn next Friday, July 17th!
Buying Diapers to Last for More Than One Baby
If you know from the start that you want your diapers to last for more than one baby, there are some definite things that you can do to make sure that the diapers you get will last for more than one baby. We haven’t been doing it for too long, but I wanted to throw out some things I’ve learned that might help you in deciding on your stash! Whether you’ll have more than one baby in diapers at one time or you just know that you plan to have more than one baby, it’s always nice to know some ways to make the money you will spend can go as far as possible:)
-The less “stuff,” the better. Hook and Loop, elastic, PUL and other extra additions to diapers give you things that can wear out. The convenience often outweighs the potential to have them wear out, just be realistic about the lifespan of some of these. If you love something like hook and look covers or pocket diapers, keep in mind that they are being washed multiple times per week for at least 2-3 years for just one child. You may need to buy a few more for another child, but you are still saving lots of money in the long run over disposable diapers!
-It’s helpful to choose snaps when you have the option and hang dry as much as possible – it will exponentially increase the life of anything with PUL, elastic, hook and loop, etc.
-It’s always beneficial to have some prefolds or flats in your stash! Especially with babies, we all know that things come up. It’s nice to have some extra diapers that are inexpensive in case you don’t get to laundry or you just need some alternative options for a bit.
-Use multi-size or one-size diapers if you like them. They make it so nice to keep diapers organized and to be able to use the same diapers on more than one baby. As I write this, we have a 25 month old(about 25lbs and smallish in general) and a 3 month old(about 14lbs and chubby thighs.) This translates to both of them being in almost the same size diapers, except that the 25 month old needs a longer rise. Enter: multi-size or one-size diapers! It’s so convenient as we have been adjusting to having two children to be able to use the same diapers on both of them. We do this for our pocket diapers and fitted diapers. We do have two sets of prefolds, infant and regular size, as well as their own covers and 2 one-size covers. With all of the new products that have come out in the past few months, we could also be using all one size covers at this point, but we already had covers and I’ve been trying to be good about not going nuts with buying more diapers:) Plus, within another month or two they’ll probably both also be in the same size in the covers we have!
If you do/have/plan to cloth diaper more than one baby(either at the same time or just that you have used your diapers for more than one baby) – what advice do you have for choosing diapers to get the most value from the money you spend?
